What changes?
According to ASFINAG, the red 2026 sticker is the last one. From 1 February 2027 Austria sells only the digital vignette. Nothing goes on the windscreen: the vignette is linked to the number plate and checked by plate, including by cameras.
A sticker bought in 2026 stays valid until it expires — the 2026 annual sticker until 31 January 2027. After that, a sticker on the glass no longer counts.
Where to buy the digital vignette
From ASFINAG itself: its online toll shop and the ASFINAG app, with no surcharge. Also at sales points such as ÖAMTC, ARBÖ and ADAC, petrol stations and tobacconists, which register the vignette to your plate.

The 18-day wait when buying online
An annual or 2-month vignette bought online from ASFINAG by a private person can only be used from the 18th day after purchase: the 14-day right of withdrawal for distance sales plus postal time for a withdrawal notice.
The 1-day and 10-day vignettes are not affected, and vignettes bought at a sales point are valid at once. If you want an annual vignette online, buy it well before your first trip.
Check the number plate carefully
The vignette is valid only for the plate entered, so every character counts — and so does the country of registration. A typo means your car has no valid vignette. Check both before buying, especially look-alike characters such as 0 and O.
Vignette-free sections remain
According to ADAC, three sections near the border stay vignette-free: the A1 from Walserberg to Salzburg-Nord, the A12 from Kiefersfelden to Kufstein-Süd and the A14 from Hörbranz to Hohenems, Pfänder tunnel included. Driving on from there needs a vignette.
